Meaning
Verse | John 12:1-8
Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray Him, objected, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.” He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it. “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”
Biblical Oil | Spikenard: Spikenard is a plant that grows only in the Himalayan mountains of India and Nepal. Mary's fragrant "Nard" oil was a rare, imported product in Israel. One denarius was the wage for one day's labor, so if Judas' estimate of the value of Mary's spikenard is accurate, "three hundred denarii" (referenced in John 12:5) in the biblical time period, would have been someone's annual salary, equivalent to several tens of thousands of dollars today. The litra of spikenard Mary used was truly "very costly" (John 12:3). It is recorded in Mark indicating that she poured it on His head as well.
Description
This Easter blend is made special because of spikenard oil. It is so meaningful for every believer knowing that this "nard" oil in our candle is the same oil that Mary used on Jesus, but more importantly for the reminder of the meanings behind the verse. Interestingly enough, the behind "Nard" oil in The Bible, was not because of the physical substance or aroma, but because of how much it was worth. Jesus wasn't concerned with what it was that she used but that she put Him as a prioriy, abiding at His feet and focused on Him without distraction. May it be our reminder to sit at the feet of Jesus and make Him our priority throughout our lives. We pray the intentional oils in this candle bring the passages we read in Word of God to life, and enhance the meaning behind the verse chosen for each candle.
